A nutritionist you can trust for your return from vacation.

I am Carla Pitarch, dietitian and currently training as a psychoneuroimmunoendocrinologist (PNIE). I begin this column with the desire to share my thoughts on a subject that I am passionate about; that I am fortunate to live it as a profession, routine, hobby and, why not, as a «vice»: nutrition.

MATTER OF CONTENT

September, a month that for many is, like January, the starting shot for the beginning of changes. Back to the routine after the long-awaited summer vacation. New target company. Not in vain has it been the month of choice for the launch of Lloret Gaceta, which I want to celebrate with this writing.

During the two summer months, my practice looks like an American Route 66 gas station, with only four brave cats showing up from time to time. But this changes well into September. The office is full of visitors with a single purpose: to get rid of the kilos accumulated during the vacations.

To this request I would like to make a reflection that I consider important: «why do you want to lose weight? When the patient says «I want to lose weight» it is as if Lloret Gaceta magazine introduced itself by saying «we are a publication that intends to launch 10 or 15 issues». They would not be telling us about their content, their identity.

On the other hand, if they introduce themselves by saying «we are a publication that aims to keep lloretenses up to date with current and contrasted information» their will and identity are much better expressed. The volume is useless if it is empty of content.

Returning to the request of I want to lose weight, my intention is that the patient seeks what his or her true desire is: Do you want to normalize your LDL cholesterol values to enjoy better health? Do you want to be able to climb a mountain again like you did years ago? Do you want your partner to feel more attractive to you? Losing weight is just the tip of the iceberg of a much deeper desire. And everyone will have their own reasons. For this reason, the therapeutic approach will be different for each of us.

My advice is, before you consider losing weight, think about what your real goal is and take it as a marker of evolution beyond the kilos to lose. This will make the challenge easier and more enjoyable.
